Marina di Ragusa was born as a fishermen’s landing place, its name was initially Mazzarelli which from the Arabic Marsa A´Rillah meant small landing place, and only during the fascist hierarch Pennavaria period before the war the name changed into Marina.
It is not easy to go back to its origins but we know that around the XVI century near the Cabrera tower, built for defensive purposes, there was a small inhabited center. But only around the nineteenth century Marina experienced a period of prosperity thanks to its trade, while in the post-war period with the unleashing of the fashion of the second house by the sea, Marina di Ragusa also experienced a real housing boom, becoming a renowned tourist destination.
Tourism in Marina greatly increased with the opening of the port in 2009. It comes in what was the old Trapani port, so called because in ‘800 the ships coming from the north-western coast (Trapani) sailed the whole Sicilian coast, making stopover there, before heading towards Malta and Africa.
Now, in the autumn / winter period, Marina has about 2000 – 3000 residents but in the summer it is easy to reach even the 60000 residents.
Because of the number of people that call Marina di Ragusa home, it is a very equipped area. It has everething you may need as well as being famous in the local area for its nightlife during the weekend. In fact its cafes, bars and restaurants are full of people from not only Marina di Ragusa but also the neighboring countries, thus animating the city center.
