Since ancient times, the islet of today\u2019s municipality of Palermo was considered a place to be used for purely defensive purposes, due to its conformation and its position (being a safe shelter against the Levant winds for small boats). The history of this locality is very focused on why it has this particular name. According to some scholars the name derives from \u201cFimi\u201d, diminutive of Eufemio (Byzantine governor of Messina). Another version says that it derives from the Latin name \u201cFimis\u201d, a term that derives from the Arabic word \u201cfim\u201d or embouchure (the channel that separates the island from the coast). There are also two hypotheses that are more \u201clegendary than historical\u201d: the first argues that in ancient times there was a women\u2019s prison on the islet, while the second that 13 girls who had committed terrible crimes had been abandoned in this place. More or less plausible stories, which give even more charm to this Sicilian town.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
